Welcome to 'A Garden For Robin'
This project is inspired by the spirit of York Gate in Leeds, a one acre garden created over a 20 year period by Robin Spencer.
We have created a contemporary space to capture the spirit of York Gate. This renowned small garden is considered by many to be a masterpiece of 20th Century garden design. |

It was the inspired creation of a young man untrained in any branch of horticulture. From his earliest years he had three abiding interests - gardening, design and collecting. It was in his garden at York Gate that all these things came together. In our design we have distilled the essence of York Gate with the innovative use of plants and materials which echo Robin's approach, re-interpreting his vision in a new garden for Robin and the 21st Century. There is a rich mixture of texture and pattern in the gardens hard landscape materials. |
| A curved Oak bench shaded by a spreading tree allows enjoyment of the lush foliage and dramatic flowers of an exuberant spring planting. Sedum screens and a curving wall built with slivers of richly coloured sandstone and bans of reclaimed slate sweep through the space to provide intrigue and enclosure. A rill of clear water gurgles over reclaimed sandstone setts into a deeper pool adding sound and movement. Three mounds unite the space - a dome of corten steel contrasts with the delicate plant forms, and two softer moss -covered domes.
Towards the rear of the garden, a more naturalistic effect is achieved with meadow grasses and wildflowers. |
